PERIODONTAL TREATMENTS

Periodontal diseases affect millions of people. These diseases start early in life and affect four out of five people. These diseases result in early loss of teeth.

Periodontal disease involves infection and inflammation of the gums initially, and if 'untreated' progresses to destruction of the bone surrounding each tooth. Eventually this will lead to loosening of teeth and their eventual loss.

Unfortunately periodontal disease is a silent disease, producing very little or no noticeable symptoms to the patient and can be far advanced before a patient seeks help. It is therefore imperative to have regular check ups when a periodontal assessment can be made.

Dr. Patrick and Dr. Moya will then recommend a course of treatment to either prevent periodontal disease or halt the inevitability of tooth loss. This will involve visits to our hygienist who will devise a long term treatment plan to prevent further disease.

As always our philosophy is in prevention of disease and not just in dentistry alone as the bacteria involved in periodontal disease have been implicated in heart disease.

In order to stress the importance of Oral Hygiene, home care and diet, we welcome parents and their children to take a look at the trouble we go to try to rescue teeth in the older patient.

Our highly skilled dental hygienist provides a range of treatments to maintain healthy gums. In addition to scaling and polishing, the hygienist will create individual home care programmes to enable patients to attain high levels of oral hygiene.
