WISDOM TEETH

people smilingIn modern times, patients have been keeping their teeth for much longer than they used to. This often means that when their wisdom teeth come through, there is not enough room for them to fully erupt into a useful position.

Frequently these partially erupted wisdom teeth can lead to the following problems:

  1. Infection and inflammation around the wisdom tooth
  2. Difficulty in cleaning around impacted wisdom teeth leading to decay in adjacent teeth.
  3. Premature occlusal contacts leading to excessive tooth wear and jaw joint pain.

Under these circumstances we advise that where appropriate, they are removed.
Complete dental care includes periodic x-ray examination of developing wisdom teeth during teen years.

If it is possible to determine early that wisdom teeth will be impacted (or trapped) we will advise removal before the roots are fully formed.
Follow this advice as it will avoid more complicated surgery later on.
